executives at toyota reveal serious concerns about how that company was dealing with safety problems. an internal e-mail from a toyota pr executive urges colleagues to, in his words, come clean. about accelerator problems in the vehicles. he did so five days before the company announced a massive recall back in january. that e-mail was obtained by the associated press. irv miller is the executive who sent it and he since retired. in the note he said he hoped toyota would not be put out of business while finding a solution to the accelerator problems. >>> an airline merger could be in the works. yet another one. associated press is reporting that united airlines and us airways are in talks about combining their operations. if that merger happens, the company would become the second biggest airline behind delta which merged with northwest back in 2008. the associated press reports the combined company would be able to cut its costs and it could compete better with delta. >>> coming up tonight, the governor of virginia adding new language to a proclamation about confederate history mont

gx 460 suv. toyota suspended sales of the lexus suv last night after consumer reports announced its tests indicated the vehicles are a rollover risk and advised people flat out not to buy them. nbc's jeff rossen joins us from chicago. so, jeff, what's the latest on the federal safety officials getting involved and what is toyota saying now? >> reporter: right. toyota is now saying they're just trying to identify and analyze the problem. toyota was shell shocked i think as consumers were, we all were by this. "consumer reports" incredibly rare that they would come out with a do not buy warning for consumers. often they say this car is better than that car but to flat out say don't buy this car because it's dangerous is something in a new league. the last time they did it was 2001. toyota of course, tamron, under incredible pressure with the gas pedal controversy and critics who say they didn't respond fast enough to that. within hours of "consumer reports" coming out with this warning to consumers, they, themselves, put a stop sales order to their dealerships nationwide. you can't go

automaker toyota. now dealerships will stop selling the 2010 lexus gx 460 until problems with handling can be worked out. just the latest in a series of safety problems here. nbc's jeff rossen is in chicago now. all right. i guess here we go again, jeff. >> yeah. here we go with toyota once again. lexus, their luxury brand. the gx 460. consumer reports yesterday came out with that do not buy order. something they very rarely do. actually telling consumers don't buy this vehicle because it can turn over. within hours of that, toyota didn't deny there was a problem. instead they came out and said, you know what? they told all of their dealers, stop selling them. we want to identify and fix this problem. and so right now, i mean, i'm looking at the numbers here. 6,000 of these suvs were sold so far. another 1,600 are sitting at dealerships. which means that toyota will stop collecting this money that they had hoped to get from this while they try to figure out what this problem is. they're also saying that if you were one of the people that bought these 6,000 lexuses gx 460s, you can bring th

this morning an urgent warning about another toyota vehicle.
